The dynamic practice of asanas in a strictly defined sequence, developed on the basis of Hatha Yoga by Sri Pattabhi Jois in the middle of the twentieth century. Ashtanga is also called yoga for young people – unlike other areas, it does not have long fixations, it is dynamic and sometimes reminds of a dance.
Translated from Sanskrit, “ashtanga” means “eight bases” or “eight branches”. The founder and keeper of the tradition of this direction was from Mysore (India). Joyce’s mentor was the main teacher of the past century, Sri Krishnamacharya. He received the ancient text of Yoga Corund, describing the practice of ashtanga vinyasa, from his teacher Rama Mohan Brahmachari and transferred the knowledge to Joyce. The manuscript itself, unfortunately, has not been preserved.
In the 60s of the XX century, Mysore, where Joyce taught, was visited by the Belgian Andre van Lisbeth. Impressed by the trip, he wrote a self-study guide, which became incredibly popular in Europe. Thousands of foreigners rushed to Mysore, wishing to personally communicate with Pattabhi Jois. The spread of ashtanga vinyasa was also facilitated by the fact that at different times it was practiced by many stars of show business, for example, actress Gwyneth Paltrow, actor Willem Dafoe and fashion designer Donna Karan. And Madonna even included, with which, as a rule, any ashtang yoga class begins in the song Shanti / Ashtangi from her album Ray of Light.
